UICN Takes Steps to Ensure Continued Operations of Willow Creek Irrigation Facilities
NORTHBROOK, Ill. – November 4, 2008 – Utilities, Inc. of Central Nevada (UICN) has learned that the Willow Creek golf course terminated service with Valley Electric for its irrigation facilities and its ponds may be nearing capacity. UICN is concerned that termination of golf course irrigation at Willow Creek (should that occur) could adversely affect wastewater treatment operations serving the surrounding area. Reports arrived at UICN’s main office in Pahrump, Nevada on Friday that neighboring customers were already observing “odors” and “fish kills” from stagnating ponds.
Acting diligently to protect the public health, UICN is taking all steps necessary to ensure that Willow Creek properly maintains ponds for storage of effluent, continues to transfer effluent to the Lakeview golf course, and continues to irrigate its own course as may be necessary for proper disposal of effluent produced from Wastewater Treatment Plant 3 that serves the area. As early as Saturday morning, UICN was meeting with Valley Electric to restore power. UICN Chief Operating Officer Lisa Sparrow said late Monday “While the water being discharged from our plant meets all requirements for public access re-use, it is important the golf course ponds are being appropriately aerated and that irrigation continues. We are very concerned about ensuring Willow Creek will continue to perform in this regard and will be taking all necessary steps to avoid public health concerns related to effluent discharge.”
UICN will continue to evaluate alternative methods to dispose of the effluent outside of the golf course should that be necessary; however, that option will increase rates to UICN’s existing customers and is therefore not preferred.
